Deuxième plus vieux parti socialiste au monde, le S.L.P. américain, fondé à New-York en 1878, principalement par des immigrés allemands selon Jean Longuet (Le Mouvement socialiste international, 1913). A partir des années 1890 ce parti sera dirigé par Daniel De Léon, et concurrencé à partir de 1897 par le Parti social-démocrate de Debs (qui absorbera l’aile droite du SLP en 1900 pour former le Socialist Party).
