Dunayevskaya (1910-1987)
Raya Dunayevskaya
Née Rae Spiegel. Pseudonyme: Freddie Forest.
Née en Ukraine et venue enfant aux États-Unis, elle est secrétaire de L. Trotsky en 1937, s’en sépare à l’occasion du pacte germano-soviétique, et participe à la scission du trotskysme américain derrière Shachtman, et développe en 1941-1942 l’analyse de l’économie de l’URSS comme un capitalisme d’État. Au sein du WP de Shachtman, elle constitue la tendance Johnson-Forest avec CLR James et Grace Lee, qui retourne au SWP de 1947 à 1950 et influencera les positions de Socialisme ou Barbarie en France. Le groupe publie ensuite la revue Correspondence.
En 1955 elle se sépare de James et Lee qui nient désormais la nécessité d’une organisation révolutionnaire et fonde le journal News and letters et développe ce qu’elle appelle l' »humanisme-marxiste ». Elle publie en 1958 Marxism and Freedom, traduit en français en 1971.

Rae Spiegel (Raya Dunayevskaya) (1910-1987)
Rae Spiegel était née dans l’empire du tsar Nicolas II le 1″ mai 1910. Elle est morte à Chicago le 9 juin 1987.
Émigrée aux États-Unis avec ses parents en 1922, elle fut gagnée très jeune par les idées socialistes et rejoignit l’Opposition de gauche aux États-Unis, qui s’appelait alors Communist League of America. En 1932, elle était secrétaire-sténographe, employée du parti et manifesta son caractère dans un conflit de travail qu’elle avait eu avec le dirigeant du groupe à l’époque, Arne Swabeck. En 1937, apprenant les difficultés de travail auxquelles Trotsky se heurtait faute de secrétaire-dactylographe connaissant la langue russe, Rae décida d’apprendre la sténographie et la dactylographie en russe, en même temps que de se perfectionner dans cette langue, afin de pouvoir offrir à Trotsky ses services de militante comme secrétaire à Coyoacán. D’abord sceptique, Trotsky fut rapidement convaincu et elle demeura au Mexique dans sa maison pendant une année, en 1937-1938. Elle a écrit sur cette période un beau texte intitulé « Trotsky, l’Homme », qu’elle a confié en 1979 aux Cahiers Léon Trotsky qui l’ont publié dans leur numéro 2 d’avril- juin de cette année.
Revenue aux Etats-Unis à la fin de 1938 à la suite d’une série de deuils familiaux, elle travailla quelque temps pour le Biulleten Oppositsii qu’elle essaya d’ancrer en Amérique. Lors de la scission de 1940, elle se rangea du côté de la minorité avec Max Shachtman et se retrouva au Workers Party. Elle y milita jusqu’à l’après-guerre sous le nom de Freddie Forest, animant une tendance dite « Johnson-Forrest » avec CLR James, dit «Johnson » et rejoignant quelque temps, peu après la guerre le Socialist Workers Party avec ses camarades. Elle défendait alors l’idée de l’Union soviétique comme un capitalisme d’État. Après sa rupture avec James en 1955, elle fonda avec Charles Denby les « News and Letters Committee » — une organisation qu’elle appela « marxiste-humaniste ». Elle a été la première à traduire en anglais les manuscrits de Marx de 1844 et l‘Abstrait de la « Science de la Logique » de Hegel de Lénine.
Parmi ses ouvrages signalons Marxism and Freedom (Marxisme et Liberté) (1958), Philosophy and Revolution (1973), Rosa Luxemburg. Women ‘s Liberation and Marx’ s Philosophy of Revolution (La Libération des femmes et la philosophie de la révolution de Marx) (1982), Women ‘s Liberation and the Dialectics of Revolution: Reaching for the Future (1985), qui ont été traduits en plusieurs langues. Ses archives ont été déposées à la Wayne State University de Detroit et ses amis ont ouvert un fonds pour la publication de ses inédits (Raya Dunayevskaya Memorial Fund, 59, Van Buren, Room 707, Chicago III.60605.).

Miss Dunayevskaya was the author of four books, including »Marxism and Freedom, From 1776 Until Today, » published in 1958, an anti-Communist study of the American roots of Marxism.
Born in Russia, she was brought to America at the age of 12. She became a secretary to Trotsky, the exiled Russian war minister, from 1937 to 1939. Trotsky was assassinated near Mexico City in 1940.
She was a translator into English of works by Marx and Lenin. She lived in Detroit from 1953 to 1984. A collection of her papers is housed in the Archives of Labor and Urban Affairs of the Walter P. Reuther Library of Wayne State University in Detroit.
Although married, she did not use the name of her husband, John Dwyer of Evanston, who survives. Also surving are two sisters, Bessie Gogol and Sonia Spiegel, both of Los Angeles.
